Family program

Addiction is a family-based disease. It causes everyone in an addicted person's family to change his or her behavior, most often in very unhealthy ways. Educating and caring for the family is an essential part of addiction treatment and recovery. At Marworth, family therapy is part of each person's substance abuse rehabilitation program. Even after addiction treatment at Marworth is completed, family programs are available.

Focus on the patient
Each patient and their family will have the opportunity to participate in therapy sessions that focus on the patient. This helps family members understand the disease of addiction and learn how to manage the family dynamic in a way that is conducive to recovery. Important topics include:

  • Disease of addiction
  • Family symptoms of addiction
  • Roles in the family system
  • Healthy communication
  • Healthy boundaries

Focus on the family member
Patients and their family member will also be able to participate in therapy sessions that focus on the family. This program helps the patient understand how his/her disease of addiction affects family members and how to facilitate recovery for the whole family system. Important topics include:

  • Challenges facing family members
  • Family self-care skills
  • Relapse prevention for the family member
